A SCHOOL near Bradford on Avon has won an award for its new green energy power and learning classroom.

Winsley Church of England Primary School was presented with the Wessex Watermark Award and £500 cheque from Wessex Water's education advisor Gillian Smith.

The school PTA organised community events to raise the money to build the outdoor eco-classroom in the school’s grounds, using building materials that were environmentally sensitive to their surroundings, and the next step is to make the classroom a green energy power learning space.

“Everyone was very excited about receiving the award as we are still fundraising to equip our eco-house,” said headteacher Becky Wilson.

“Our new eco outdoor classroom will include something that is called a renewable energy centre. This will allow children to create, monitor, measure and use renewable energy from the sun, water, wind and pedal power.

“It works via an energy-monitoring panel and power unit, to power lights, a laptop or a radio station.

“Green renewable energy has a particular relevance when one is producing or monitoring it oneself and that is just what the children will be doing once they step inside their new classroom.”

The Watermark Award provides funds for environmental projects within the Wessex Water area and has supported more than 900 environmental initiatives.
