A DAY centre that provides leisure activities for pensioners in Bradford on Avon is under threat of closure after not being able to secure funding due to a lack of trustees.

The Cedar Court Day Centre, which works from Berryfield Road every Monday, caters for around 20 elderly residents in and around the town who are aged between 80-100.

Treasurer Pat Walford, who was one of the originals who started the group in 1999 said if the group doesn’t secure two more trustees soon then she would have seriously doubts over whether it could run in a year’s time.

She added: “The way it is looking, I will end up being the only trustee and we are supposed to have three which is a problem because when I have gone to apply for grants, which we desperately need, we have been turned down because we don’t have full numbers.

“We have been very lucky in the last few years but this year, Wiltshire Council said we weren’t eligible unless we have the full three trustees.

“We could go on for about a year or so but we wouldn’t be able to continue much further without more grants.”

Run on behalf of Age UK, the day centre offers residents the chance to socialise over a cup of tea before being entertained in the afternoon with a musical performance or some games.

The centre is supported by the Trowbridge Guild of Community Service who help transports the members to the club.

Mrs Walford, who has also been chairman of the trustees throughout its existence, added: “It is very much a social gathering and it started when the old Bradford on Avon hospital was closing.

“The members would be disappointed if it was to stop running because a lot of them look forward to coming on a Monday and it would be a great shame.”

Mrs Walford added that within the role of a trustee, an individual would need to attend a meeting every two to three months as well as being responsible for helping to run the club.
