A £10,000 GRANT will create an outdoor amphitheatre at Churchfields the Village School in Monkton Farleigh, after the primary school was one of 15 organisations to win cash from the Theatre Royal Bath’s creative fund.

The school will begin construction of their very own outdoor theatre this year, inspired by the world famous Minack Theatre in Cornwall, after their bid was accepted on Monday.

“We are ecstatic to receive this, it is a wonderful opportunity for the school to develop outdoor learning, work with the local community and Woodland Adventurers Nursery,” said head teacher Simon Futcher.

The amphitheatre, which should be up and running next year, will not only provide pupils with outdoor learning opportunities but also host concerts for the community.

“It is not just for us, it is for the local community and one that should strengthen links with them which is great,” said Mr Futcher. “The children will also have the opportunity to learn not just about acting but also lighting and stage management."

“The kids were really chuffed and are really excited about this and being involved in the project going forward. We are so delighted with it all.”

The school was one of 90 bidders, including schools, theatre companies, hospitals, choirs and community groups, to receive grants to go towards art projects.

Theatre Royal Bath chairman, Greg Ingham, said: “It is truly inspiring to see the huge volume and variety of creative and artistic projects taking place.

“As well as being able to offer financial support to these projects, it has been an incredibly rewarding experience to make contact with many organisations, and in some cases encourage them to work and support each other.

“We are looking forward to cementing some of these new working relationships over the coming months, as we see the projects we have funded growing to fruition.”
