TWO years since the future of the Westwood Show was in jeopardy due to the bank holiday rain, organisers have hailed this year’s event as one of their best as the sun basked down on the village.

Hundreds of villagers came out in force to support the annual show on bank holiday Monday which was held at the manor house, adjoining field and St Mary the Virgin church where floral displays were on offer to wellwishers.

John Streeter, chair of the show committee said with the sun beaming down, everyone had a great time.

He added: “The entries for the flower and vegetable show have remained quite steady and we had quite a few last minute entries this year which brought the number up.

“The show is always well attended by the village and it is about getting them together.

“The last two years we have had pretty terrible weather and so I’m very glad it was sunny.

“The entries entered this year were of a very high standard and the judges commented at how good it was.”

An esteemed guest to this year’s show was Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis who handed out the prizes to the winners in the flower and vegetable show. One of his daughters lives in the village.

Mr Streeter added: “We’ve always said we don’t put on the show to make a profit, we just need to cover our overheads and so any profit we make, we give to local charities.

“The show did its best and Michael Eavis was very well received and he took the time to take pictures with everyone after he did presented everyone with their prizes.

“The villagers seem to really enjoy the show and considering there are only about 500 people in Westwood, there was a great turnout with 470 adults through the door.”

Next year the committee are hoping to hold a medieval banquet in the days leading up to the show at the New Inn pub

They will soon start to plan next year’s show and they welcome new volunteers in the planning, preparation or delivery of the event.
