THE mother of a nine-year-old boy who died in 2012 will be one of many taking part in a Bradford on Avon charity cycle ride on Sunday.

Ever since the death of George Hutchins, who was starved of oxygen at birth, causing severe quadriplegic cerebral palsy, George's Marvellous Bike Ride has taken place, raising funds for various charities.

The 2016 edition, now in its fifth year, will be raising funds for Stepping Stones Specialist Centre, which supports children with special needs, and ranges from nine to 60 miles along Kennet and Avon canal towpaths.

Last year 60 riders took part, and organisers, including George’s Mum Anna Hutchings, are hoping for an even bigger turnout this year.

"The fact that George still influences people with this wonderful charity event makes his memory come alive," said Ms Hutchings, who will be participating in and supervising the event.

"It is fantastic the support we get from the organisers and riders, despite many not ever meeting him.

“When George died unexpectedly we wanted to continue helping others like him, to enhance their lives and relieve the pressure on their families.

“Funds raised through the bike ride aims to do just that and is a fitting tribute to George, who loved the outdoors - it should be a wonderful day out."

In the past five years, more than £20,000 has been raised towards Stepping Stones, George's former special school in Ipswich, the Thomas Wolsey School, and England boccia player Jonah Wright, who also has cerebral palsy.

Ms Hutchings' brother and George's Uncle, Nick, thought of the idea in the first place and he too will be riding in the event on Sunday.

"The event has grown in popularity each year thanks to the dedication of the riders who sign up," added Ms Hutchings, who lives in Seend.

"The more riders we get, the more money we can raise to make a real difference to families whose children suffer from life-limiting illnesses.”

This year the event will start and finish at The Boathouse, Widbrook, Bradford-on-Avon, with riders setting off at 10am.
