VANDALS have once again inflicted damage upon the Victory Field cricket pavilion, just weeks after electric shutters were installed to keep them out.

Bradford on Avon Town Council paid nearly £6,000 last month to install the shutters following a litany of break-ins, costing thousands of pounds of damage, over the years.

Late last month, however, vandals were at it again, damaging the new shutters and trying to gain entry into the pavilion – meaning that once again, they will need to be repaired.

At a town council meeting on August 30, Cllr Mike Roberts proposed that CCTV cameras should be installed so that they can prosecute the perpetrators.

“We thought that these new shutters would do the trick but obviously that is not the case,” he said.

“For ages people have tried to break in and it seems they are still determined to get in there when there is nothing to steal.

“By installing CCTV we would at least be able to catch them on film and that could be used to prosecute them. Everything from windows, doors and tiles have been damaged.

“You can get a four-camera CCTV system for £400, which is quite reasonable. We have spent thousands over the years on this and this could be what is needed to stop it.”

An increasingly fed up Cllr John Potter also backed Cllr Robert’s proposal to install CCTV.

He said: “You cannot make it up can you? We fork out thousands on these shutters and within weeks the vandals are at it again.

“It is just a fiasco. Why do they always smash it up? It is just extraordinary to me.

“This building is used quite a lot by the community but there is nothing of note to steal from there. There seems to be no end to this and no answer to it either.

“I think The time might be right for CCTV. This really is an awful tradition they have got going on. It is just mindless.

“Now the guys who installed the shutters will have to come back and fix it again – it is just a farce.”

The pavilion is used by the town’s cricket club throughout the summer and youth football teams use it in the winter.
