A 45-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murdering Melanie Hall, from Bradford Leigh, has been released without charge.

The man, who has not been identified, was arrested in June after voluntarily attending a police station in Wiltshire and asking to speak to the inquiry team.

It followed a national appeal for information on the 20th anniversary of the university graduate's disappearance.

Avon and Somerset Police said officers had concluded that the information given by the man does not take the inquiry any further.

Miss Hall, 25, was last seen at the former Cadillacs nightclub in Walcot Street, Bath, in the early hours of June 9, 1996.

Her remains were found in vegetation off the northbound slipway at junction 14 of the M5 at Thornbury in 2009.

Avon and Somerset Police now have DNA evidence from an item found at the scene where Miss Hall's remains were discovered.

On the 20th anniversary of her disappearance earlier this month, her parents Steve and Pat made an appeal for information and offered £50,000 of their own money as a reward. That has since been matched by a national newspaper.

Detective Superintendent Andy Bevan, who is leading the inquiry, said: "We've updated Melanie's parents Steve and Pat on this latest development and have reiterated our determination to bring their daughter's murderer to justice.

"I firmly believe we're getting ever closer to finding out who was responsible, especially with the advancements in DNA technology.

"I have a team of officers and staff actively working on this case and I'm extremely grateful to the public, especially the residents of Bath, for their continuing support and their response to all our previous appeals.

"It's never too late to come forward and speak to us. Even the smallest piece of information may prove to be the key to solving this case."

The force does not have a prime suspect or any conclusive evidence that Miss Hall's death is linked to other murders or sexual offences.

Police have now arrested 10 people in connection with the case since the investigation began but no-one has ever been charged.
