A WOMAN from Winsley is looking for anyone who may be able to help identify the people mentioned on the Honours Board in the Winsley Village Club.

Linda Brooks has been taking part in a project to identify and commemorate men from Winsley who served in the First World War. After finding information on 83 of the survivors, Mrs Brooks is searching for any relatives or people who may have known the remaining 16.

Mrs Brooks explained: “We are developing a website to commemorate the men who served in the war. I am looking for information about the names on the people who served their country, but it hasn’t been easy finding them.

“I started the process last year with aims of finishing it all by 2018 so we will have a full memorial of all the people who died and who came back to the area after their service. The men who returned could’ve moved to Bradford on Avon or Trowbridge or other areas in Wiltshire.”

As the Honour Board doesn’t list the full names of the soldiers, Mrs Brooks is hoping the appeal will reach families in the county who may have had fathers, grandfathers, uncles or brothers from the village who were called up to fight. Many of the surnames on the board are those of well-known Wiltshire families.

“One of the main difficulties is that only surname and initial are given and the initial may be their preferred name. I am hoping for a full name, date of birth and regiment for these 16 names: T Baker, F J Berryman, D Blackman, R Blackman, R E Blackman, A W Churchill, R Dainton, E Gane, G Hobbs, C Lewis, W Lewis, H Pickard, W Plenty, A Shell, F Tucker and H Wood,” added Mrs Brooks.

The Honours Board is on display at the Winsley Village Club, next to the village hall, and Mrs Brooks has posted a picture of it on the village website www.winsley.org.uk

Mrs Brooks added: “Information on any of the other names would be gratefully received to help bring life to the history, and any photos would be marvellous. I am also looking for household addresses to compile a map of where they lived before the war.”

Anyone who has any information about the remaining names can contact Mrs Brooks by emailling WinsleyAtWar@gmail.com.
