VISITORS and residents who ‘popped into’ a Fairtrade café at St Nicholas Church Hall at Winsley were given a warm welcome and provided with mugs of hot tea and coffee as well as home-made cake.
The ‘pop-up’ café was held on Saturday, November 25 from 10.30am to 12 noon and was organised by Pippa Tate, from Bradford on Avon, who provided a Traidcraft stall to sell Fairtrade products, such as chocolates, cards and Christmas gifts.
Pippa said: “We have had lots of people come in and also people who have spent a lot of money. Some have bought their small Christmas gifts and others have come to stock up on Fairtrade groceries.”
The café sold goods produced by Fairtrade producers in third world countries such as South America, Africa and India, including tea, coffee, chocolate, honey, and other groceries.
These are produced by individuals and companies which agree not to use child labour and to look after their land. In return, they are given a fair price for their products and a premium which enables them to build community facilities such as schools and hospitals.
