ANGRY traders in Bradford on Avon have complained about visits from one of Wiltshire Council’s enforcement officers to investigate breaches of planning control.

Some were left “extremely distressed” following the officer's visits to several premises in the town’s historic conservation area.

He told occupiers they were breaching planning controls by making unauthorised alterations to Grade 2 listed buildings.

Cllr Laurie Brown, a trustee of The Hub, a charity that gives welfare and benefits advice, counselling and organises a foodbank in collaboration with the Trussell Trust, said: “We are extremely distressed at the way the verbal notice of enforcement was issued in front of volunteers.

“We had no prior notice and no hint that our signs were in breach of the controls.”

The officer also visited two local travel agents, Holidays & Cruises for You and TravelOptions4u, to deliver the same warning.

They were told that unless signs, leaflet holders and lighting alterations were removed within 14 days they would face criminal prosecution.

A Wiltshire Council spokesperson said: “We were alerted to some concerns and explained to the occupiers that it is important to apply for listed building consent before making changes. We have also offered them advice and support to do this.

“We understand The Hub does a great job in the community and we have no issue with them putting up signage in the windows but they need to work with us to ensure our heritage is preserved.”
