Businesses offered free energy meters to help the environment

A climate friendly group in Bradford on Avon are offering to lend local businesses energy meters to help them save money by monitoring their electricity consumption.

The 12 energy meters, 10 donated by Scottish and Southern Energy and two bought by the group, can be borrowed for a minimum of one month, free of charge.

The scheme is part of the group’s attempt to get businesses signed up to its Carbon Neutral 2050 declaration, and committed to reducing their energy consumption.

Organiser and Climate Friendly Bradford member Martin Evans said: “A lot of local businesses are based in old buildings, as it is an old town, and they aren’t very energy efficient.

“With the meters businesses can keep an eye on how their energy consumption varies at different times and when different things are used, and they will be able to make savings.

“Everyone has been very keen. The meters are free and there is no maximum loan period. But we really want people to sign the declaration and commit themselves to saving energy.”

Eight meters have already been loaned out, to businesses including the Ale and Porter restaurant, the Fat Fowl restaurant, Who Cares? ethical supermarket, Piha surf store and G Binding Electrical.

I had a meter like this but it ended up in the bin, at the end of the day if I want my lights on I will if I want to boil a kettle I will. Maybe the group should go to Las Vegas and have a word with them about leaving the lights on!

As Chairman of the Bradford on Avon Chamber, we fully support this initiative and are pleased that so many local businesses are taking advantage of the free energy meters. Making our businesses more energy efficient will help make them more profitable in these economically difficult times.
