Bookcase led way to cannabis factory

The drugs factory The drugs factory

POLICE have seized an estimated £225,000 worth of cannabis plants from a Bradford Leigh farm in one of West Wiltshire’s biggest ever drugs raids on Wednesday morning.

The 10.15am raid at Fairfield Piggeries, part of a joint operation between Wiltshire Police and Avon and Somerset Police, saw around 600 plants in various stages of growth taken from the site.

Three men were arrested at the farm, in Leigh Road, for cultivating cannabis, while another man was arrested in Stoke St Michael, in Somerset, as part of the sting.

Cannabis plants were found in six buildings, all linked by a water hose, on the farm land with some of the plants being hidden in a room behind a door which had been made to look like a book case in one of the buildings.

Sergeant Scott Hargreave said: “This is a great result and is one of the biggest factories we’ve ever found in this part of the county. We’d recently received intelligence that there was cannabis being grown at Fairfield Farm and as a part of an inquiry with Avon and Somerset Police we discovered that some of the plants grown here where being supplied in the Avon and Somerset patch, so we carried out a joint operation.

“There was quite a sophisticated set-up on the farm to hide the plants. They had a door mocked up as a bookcase, which looked like something from a James Bond film, while they’d gone to extreme measures to insulate the roofs of the buildings to avoid detection from heat sensors.”

Sgt Hargreave said that usually there would be three crops of the plants throughout the year which could be worth an estimated £600,000.

Around 30 officers took part in Wednesday’s operation which included two dog units, the dedicated crime team and other support teams.

The armed response group also seized seven guns during the raids at Fairfield Piggeries.

PC Frank Cavill, of the armed response group, said: “There is a certificate holder for the firearms but these are being taken for now pending the result of the criminal investigation when the man may or may not get them back depending on the outcome.”

Wiltshire Police hope this raid will deter others from starting their own cannabis factories.

Sgt Hargreave said: “We are not exactly sure how long these plants have been here but we’d like to think we nipped it in the bud at an early stage.

“Wiltshire Police as well as Avon and Somerset Police want to stress that any supply or distribution of drugs will not be tolerated and we will act robustly to target any individuals involved in the cultivation or supply of all kinds of drugs.

“We’d also like any members of the public who have information about crimes of this nature to come forward.”

Any information on illegal drug activity can be reported by calling police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Joint operation? nipped it in the bud?

Stone me, do we have coppers with a sense of humour?

Anyway, glad you managed to weed them out!

When you boil this down to it's essence this story reads "Some men arrested for growing plants on a farm". When you look at it like that it all starts to look a bit pathetic.
People will look back on this era of Cannabis prohibition much as we now look back and see how stupid alcohol prohibition was. This is all so damaging to society and every day the damage gets worse and harder to recover from. Can you imagine the power that the likes of Al Capone would now wield if the alcohol prohibition had been allowed to continue for nearly 100 years? They would have enough legislators in their pockets so that they could influence governments and ensure that alcohol prohibition continued. Now that is exactly the position the "drug barons" are in today. For this reason I believe that legalisation of Cannabis is the most urgent issue on this planet today.
What we need, instead of a blanket prohibition of Cannabis, is a proper legally regulated supply that will benefit the U.K. economy through huge tax revenues and free up the resources of the police and courts to deal with real crimes. Most of all a properly regulated supply will protect young people, as it is in the area of Age Limits that prohibition has proven such a huge failure. In countries where there is provision for the legal supply of Cannabis to adults the use of Cannabis, and indeed other substances as well, is greatly reduced amongst youngsters. This is because the licensed suppliers know full well that if they are caught supplying to minors they stand to lose their licence, so they just don't do it. Whereas in good old Blighty we have to soldier on with prohibition giving the whole market straight into the hands of dealers who simply want to see your money, they will sell Cannabis to anyone of any age. And that's not all! These unscrupulous dealers are often likely to say "Oh sorry, I couldn't get any weed this week, this other stuff is all they had, why don't you try some?" and then proceed to offer Heroin.
So, legalise, regulate and tax the supply of Cannabis for a Britain that is happier, less violent and more affluent.

600 plants? GW Pharmaceuticals are growing at least 60,000 in six greenhouses on a Kent science park. They extract all the active ingredients from this crop of high potency, high quality cannabis, bottle it and sell it at huge profit worldwide. They are doing no less than these blokes but have a government licence. This is a joke and a serious waste of public money designed to protect the interests of the governments corporate friends and their 'legal' product which anyone can make at home (illegal). It has nothing at all to do with protecting the public.

What have you actually acheived here??? nothing because its about 1% if even that of cannabis on the streets. You can never wipe out cannabis, you are fighting a losing battle we hear it from the police and ex policemen all the time.

The only way to stop this is to take it from the criminal gangs and regulate it or atleast decriminalise it, let us grow for personal use if needed, you can make your own alcohol if you wish why not allow us to grow our own cannabis.

Its been studied hundreds of times cannabis is safer that alcohol and tobacco cannabis is also used to treat cancer. In Isreal doctors are treating cancer patients with cannabis and curing them so why the hell are people in this country dieing from cancer when they can be treated with a plant, people are dying and the goverment dont care aslong as they can protect their reputation.

While GW Pharma grow high potent plants to turn it all into hash oil and sell it to the public at a huge profit. but yet the goverment tell us the extract only two components from the plant and that it is entirely safe, well..... they are lieing because they use the entire plant watch this video as proof...
