A Bradford on Avon man who was knocked down by a car during a fundraiser where he aimed to dance from John O'Groats to Land's End, raising £50,000, is on the mend and eager to start boogieing again.

Former St Laurence School pupil Ben Hammond, 34, and a cyclist, who was part of his support team for the Dance Britain for Burma challenge, were struck by the car in Polsham, near Wells, in Somerset, last Wednesday evening.

Mr Hammond, who was taken to Yeovil Hospital for treatment, suffered concussion in the incident and required stitches for his head injury while he also had minor cuts and bruises.

Earlier that day, Mr Hammond had busted a move in Bradford on Avon as he travelled through the town as part of the fundraiser, dancing with residents on the town’s bridge.

The dancer hopes to have his stitches removed tomorrow (Wednesday) and aims to get back into the swing of his fundraiser, dancing along the streets of the country wearing his matching neon yellow tutu and headband, later this week.

Mr Hammond, who has been recovering at the home of his family in Bradford on Avon, said: “My legs are bruised up, so I’ll have to take things gently and won’t be able to move at the one marathon a day pace that I was. I’ll also be taking a more direct route now to Land’s End but I’m just really looking forward to starting again.”

Avon and Somerset Police arrested Alanna Rugg, 25, from Wookey, in connection with the incident, who has been charged with drinking and driving, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and failing to report an accident.

She has been bailed to appear at South Somerset Magistrates' Court on October 19.

Mr Hammond started his challenge, raising funds to be split between Amnesty International, Burma Campaign UK, Partners Relief and Development, Learn Burma and Prospect Burma, on August 13 and had originally aimed to finish on October 13.
