Poundland is to open a temporary store in Chippenham after its ceiling caved in last week.

It will open a temporary pop-up store just five minutes away, in Emery Centre shopping centre, on Saturday.

The discount retailer, and Costa Coffee next door, have been closed for more than a week since the collapse of the ceiling on the evening of July 22.

Wiltshire Council said it expected it to be weeks rather than days before the popular High Street shops were safe to reopen.

The incident happened a couple of hours after closing and no one was in the unit at the time. Police closed off the High Street at 8.30pm.

The fire service sent a crew from Corsham, who made sure the premises were kept safe while a structural engineer from Wiltshire Council carried out the inspection.

A spokesman for Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We got a call at 8pm. The ceiling in Poundland had collapsed and a wall in Costa had cracked and was bowing.”

Poundland said it was opening a pop-up store because of “unprecedented demand from Chippenham customers”.

Trading director Richard Lancaster said: “We are delighted to be opening this pop-up store for our Chippenham customers following strong demand whilst the current store is closed for maintenance.”

They did not indicate how long they expected maintenance to take.

PC John Brixey, community beat manager for Chippenham town centre, said: “No one was inside at the time and no one was injured.”

I don't understand why a firecrew from Corsham got called out for this? They are retained firefighters (part timers), so it would have cost more to use them. Surely if the Chippenham crews were out on a shout, they could have looked at it later - it's not as if anyone was in any danger!

I bet they wish they hadn't used their own Poundland screws for the ceiling now!
