St Mary's Pre-school in Chippenham has been transformed by a £6,000 refurbishment including a colourful mural.

The nursery on Rowden Hill has been fundraising for five years and has now put the money to good use.

The toddlers are welcomed to the building by an enormous 52-foot long mural depicting a colourful cartoon landscape, created by Trowbridge artist Jill Welch.

She said: “I hope the mural will bring the children hours of joy.”

Outside there is also a mud kitchen bought from Wiltshire Wood Recycling, safety railings and decking, while inside there is a new office, toilets, carpets and storage units.

Kerrie Hanlon, who chairs the St Mary's Pre-school committee, said: “My family gave up their summer holiday to work on the inside.

"My mum, my husband Paul and our two children Harry and Niamh were there every single day for six weeks.

“Niamh loved the fact she got to go to pre-school every day but wondered where her friends had got to.”

The independently run pre-school won an award from daynurseries.co.uk in June, coming third in the Top 10 Recommended Nurseries South West England 2014.

The awards were based on over 12,818 recommendations received during 2013-14 from parents, relatives and guardians of children who attend the nurseries.

St Mary’s still has places available for three to five-year-olds, 8.45am to 2.45pm, Monday to Friday, during term time.
