CHIPPENHAM Scouts and McDonald’s staff filled 45 bin bags when they swept an area of Cepen Park South free of litter.

The ten to 14-year-old scouts and their leaders gave up six hours on Sunday to clean up Sandown Drive and from Sainsbury's up to The Pheasant Carvery.

Along the way the 12 youngsters picked up a mass of loom bands, a car aerial, plastic flower, and even a somewhat muddy unopened four pack of beer.

The 10th Chippenham Scout Group were working towards their Community Challenge badge which contributes to the Chief Gold Scout award.

Simon Brown, section leader of Tuesday Scouts, said: “It's amazing what people throw away. But what was most amazing was the total number of rubbish bags collected.

“It was a long day for all, starting at 11am and finishing at 5pm, although McDonald’s did provide lunch for everyone which kept the Scouts very happy.

“The Scouts done us all proud and it was very encouraging to get positive comments from the local neighbourhood, pedestrians and passing motorists.

“With thanks to McDonald’s, this a major way towards the Scouts’ Community Challenge badge which they certainly deserve.”
