THREE hundred soldiers are to march through Chippenham to mark Commonwealth Day on Monday, March 9.

The 9 Theatre Logistic Regiment of the Royal Logistic Corps is one of the most culturally diverse regiments in the British Army. It represents communities from Fiji, the Caribbean, India and Africa, as well as the Gurkha community in Nepal.

The troops, based at Buckley Barracks in Hullavington, will celebrate their Commonwealth links by marching through the town centre led by their regimental band. It will be the regiment’s first official celebration of Commonwealth Day.

A free Commonwealth fair in the Neeld Hall from 11.45am to 2pm, open to everyone, will also mark the diversity of cultures, with officers, soldiers and their families showcasing different traditions through food tasting, music, dance and national dress.

Sue Wilthew, chief executive of Chippenham Town Council, which has helped organise the event, said: “Chippenham feels a great affinity for many Commonwealth countries largely due to our links with the regiment.

“We’ve been delighted by the enthusiasm of our friends from 9 Regiment. We hope people will come along on the day to support the march and enjoy the wonderful activities going on in the Neeld Hall too.”

Mayor of Chippenham John Scragg will raise the Commonwealth flag at the Town Hall at 10am and read the Commonwealth Affirmation. This will be followed by the military march from 11am.

The troops will assemble at Wood Lane car park and march from there into Burlands Road, The Causeway, the Market Place, High Street and The Bridge, finishing in Bath Road car park at 11.30am.

Residents and businesses along the route have been told of the rolling road closure. Parking will be suspended on the route from 6am to 11.30am.
