Corsham man Terry Park, 64, was overpaid more than £17,000 in benefits a joint investigation with Wiltshire Council and the Department of Work and Pensions found.

Park, of Tupman Road, failed to declare to both Wiltshire Council and to the Department of Work and Pensions that he was receiving a private pension and had received a pension payout, which were both paid into an undeclared bank account.

He continued to receive housing benefit, council tax benefit/reduction, incapacity benefit and income support for which he was not entitled.

He pleaded guilty to three charges under the Social Security Administration Act 1992 and at Swindon Magistrates' Court on Friday, February 6, he was sentenced to a 12-month community order with 100 hours unpaid work and £60 victim surcharge.

Terry Dainton, 51, of Loxley Close, Melksham, was overpaid more than £8,800 in benefits.

Dainton failed to declare to Wiltshire Council that he had capital of more than £50,000 held in undeclared accounts.

He made a joint claim for benefit and received housing and council tax benefit based on the fact he had no capital and was receiving a low income.

He pleaded guilty to two charges under the Social Security Administration Act 1992 and was sentenced to a 12 month community order with 100 hours unpaid work, nine months supervision, £400 costs and £60 victim surcharge.

Dainton was ordered to pay costs and victim surcharge in full within seven days as he is not of limited financial means and will have to pay any overpaid monies to Wiltshire Council.

Sonia Coombs, 46, of Churchfields, Trowbridge, was overpaid more than £3,000 in benefits.

Coombs failed to declare to Wiltshire Council that she was in a relationship when she made her claim and received housing and council tax benefit as a sole person.

She was actually married five days after she made her claim and also failed to declare she had started work.

Coombs pleaded guilty to three charges under the Social Security Administration Act 1992 and was sentenced to a 12 month community order with 150 hours unpaid work, a £60 victim surcharge and £150 contribution to costs.

She will be expected to pay back the overpayment in full to Wiltshire Council.
