Neston residents force mine traffic rethink

Concerned residents turned out in force at Spring Park Quarry consultation meeting in Neston Memorial Hall last week to slam plans to open a mine on the site.

Family-run quarrying business, Ham and Doulting Stone Ltd, held the meeting last Thursday to allay fears and concerns after Wiltshire Council received 25 letters of objections against plans to reopen the former quarry site and put a track from the site through fields to Neston village, which would see 40-tonne lorries passing through the narrow streets on a daily basis.

Among those who turned up to see what the company had to say and see the plans on display boards were residents Sue and Nick Crane, who were not happy with a designated lorry route through the village and onto Dicketts Road.

Mrs Crane said: “It’s just not suitable to have large vehicles going through such a small village every day. They were saying it has got to be a benefit generally but it doesn’t benefit Neston, apart from offering six jobs.”

Another resident, Jean Hartley, has lived in the village for 71 years at Green Hill. She said: “We have a very nice little village and we have already been invaded by the MOD at Royal Arthur, they have now moved to Basil Hill.

“Traffic is going to increase a lot and I just think anything trundling through the village is going to be a nightmare.”

Following the meeting the company has said it now plans to look into creating a track from the mine to the B3353 near Gastard to avoid Neston village.
