Driver in court over death of Box cyclist

A woman has appeared before a judge accused of causing the death of a Box cyclist last August.

Kylee Powell is charged causing the death of Sarah Hayward on Bath Road, Box, through careless driving.

No charge was put to the 27-year-old during a brief hearing at Swindon Crown Court today and she did not enter a plea.

She is alleged to have caused the accident on Wednesday August 19 last year when she was driving a Ford Focus on the A4 close to the Platinum Nissan car dealership.

Powell, of Holcombe Vale, Bathampton, Bath, was released on bail to Friday March 19 when she is due to enter her plea to the allegation.

The charge of death by careless driving was introduced in 2008 and the maximum sentence on conviction is a five year jail term and a mandatory driving ban.

Mrs Hayward, 39, was cycling towards Box shortly before 7.30pm in the evening when the accident happened.

It is believed that she was in contact with both the bonnet and windscreen of the car during the collision.

She was taken to the Royal United Hospital in Bath after suffering serious head injuries but later died.

Mrs Hayward married Pete, a teacher in Bath, in July 2006 and lived near Box with their young son Harry, who had his second birthday in September last year.

She was a keep-fit fanatic and attended a running club where she met her husband and ran half-marathons to raise money for breast cancer and stroke charities.

She worked in Bath for many years, eventually progressing to become a director of a finance company in the city.

This is the second of two articles I have read tonight where two very honourable ladies have died due to being knocked off their bikes by car drivers. I’m not saying that these cyclists were killed deliberately, but we all have to share the roads, and it is a shame that there are selfish car drivers who don’t spare enough thought towards vulnerable road users. You only have to watch in any town centre in this region the number of folk are willing to drive with a mobile phone pressed against their ear.

Cyclists aren't exactly innocent either. How many have you seen jumping red lights or riding on pavements?

The same old pathetic argument thrown up by the ignorant, neither point made was a cause of these deaths. I do agree cyclists shouldn’t cycle on pavements, but seeing deaths like these reported won’t give the less confident cyclist much assurance of their safety when using the roads.

Same sort of comment can be made back at your original post.
Unfortunately there are inconsiderate people in any group of road users - be they cyclists or car-drivers.

I can't say I've read any reports of inconsiderate cyclists killing innocent road users. This cannot be said of inconsiderate car drivers.

It can happen: http://www.thisislon

o

but yes obviously: a person driving a car is in control of something far more dangerous than a bicycle.
