Daredevil Katharine Joy braved -30C conditions in the Canadian wilderness to raise money for charity.

Katharine, 28, who lived in Box and has now moved to London, raised the money after her mother Mary died from cancer last April.

Katharine took part in the BBC programme The Challenge last year, where fit members of the public were invited to take part in extreme challenges.

She entered the Ukatak adventure race, which involved crossing 500km of freezing wilderness on cross country skis, snowshoes and mountain bikes. The race took place over five days and four nights and she slept for just one hour a night during the challenge.

Ms Joy said she was delighted to raise the money, of which £3,700 went to Cancer Research UK.

She presented the remaining £5,000 to the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group on Saturday at the Bear pub in Box.

Gordon Hall, chairman of the Box branch of the support group, said he was delighted to accept the cheque and would liaise with Ms Joy on how the money should be spent.
