PLANS to knock down a house in Corsham and replace it with six smaller homes has been thrown out by North Wiltshire District Council's development control committee.
Robert Wilford, who lives near the site, said the development would spoil one of the main routes into Corsham.
The house, called Southcroft, is located on the corner of Prospect and Dicketts Road and under the plan would be knocked down to make way for six linked homes in a crescent shape.
An earlier application to replace the house with nine units had previously been withdrawn.
Eight letters of objection were sent in by residents concerned about the density of housing, the layout and appearance not being in keeping with the area.
Planning officers recommended approval.
But Cllr Peter Davis was critical of the plan to demolish what he called a tasteful detached property and proposed refusal.
Cllr Roy Jackson said the application was of great concern to Corsham Town Council.
"This is one of the main entrances to Corsham. It would destroy that entrance," he said.
Cllr Tom Briggs said: "It just doesn't look right."
He added: "The whole thing is just a complete mess."
The committee voted to refuse permission.
