Corsham's town lion is gleaming in gold, thanks to a champion design of a Corsham Primary School pupil.

The statue, in the Martingate Centre, has had a makeover to mark the Olympics, designed by eight-year-old Toni Sutton.

The student’s design beat 634 others from children at schools in Corsham, Shaw, Neston and Box.

The competition was organised by Sue Witt, whose shop, The Toy Box, is in the centre.

Mrs Witt, who repainted the lion, said: “He does look quite stunning and that’s thanks to Toni’s fabulous design, which translated really well from the paper to the statue. The competition really caught the imagination of our local children.”

Toni visited the gold cat last Wednesday, the day Team GB won their first gold medals.

Mrs Witt said: “We had a really good time and the GB team winning the medals really did complete a great day.”
