Union hopes delay scuppers Melksham Post Office move
8:00am Monday 21st April 2014 in Melksham
The union for Melksham postal workers is hoping that whatever has delayed the relocation of the town’s Post Office has scuppered the plan.
Two weeks ago the Post Office said the opening of the new High Street branch had been indefinitely postponed, with no explanation of how long for or why.
Communications Workers’ Union territorial representative Chris Roche said: “I am hoping it will derail the move.
“I think a couple of staff were due to go to another office and are now staying put, but a number of other members were looking to take redundancy packages, so they will have to recruit new staff.”
The Church Road office was due to be moved to the former Carpet Barn store on May 2, as part of a new stationery store managed by Bristol retailer Crabb and Andrews.
The Wiltshire Times has approached the Post Office and Crabb and Andrews, but neither was willing to comment.
Senior stakeholder manager Laura Tarling said: “Due to the problem with the lease we don’t have any further news, unfortunately, in terms of how long that will be.
“Post Office services will be maintained where they currently are.”
