Councillors will visit the site of a proposed 30 hectare solar farm on the edge of Broughton Gifford on Wednesday, before deciding whether to grant it planning permission.

The bid, which would be the third solar farm in the village, was ‘called in’ to the western area planning committee by Melksham Without North Cllr Terry Chivers.

The committee agreed to delay its decision by three weeks, to give members time to visit the site and assess the impact.

The farm would be east of Leechpool Farm, off Norrington Lane, with developers claiming it could power 4,500 homes. A second solar farm is currently being built on the opposite side of the lane, with a 20-hectare farm also proposed at Great Chalfield. Last month the committee refused permission for a fourth, much larger, solar farm the other side of Melksham. The developer is to appeal.
