Pupils at Melksham Oak Community School achieved 58 per cent five A*-C including English and maths.

Headteacher Stephen Clark said: “We are delighted with these results, especially in the light of the significant changes made to the exam system this year.

“The results reflect a tremendous effort by our students, supported by parents, staff and governors.”

Harry Gazzard, from Melksham, achieved a distinction star in PE (the equivalent of an A*), eight As and three Bs.

He hopes to become a pilot in the RAF and is returning to the school in September to join the sixth form.

He said: “I am really happy. I was expecting to get lower grades; you always have doubt beforehand, but all the hard work has paid off.

“To be a pilot you need two A-levels and five GCSEs. Based on my results I think I might change my sixth form choices, but I’m looking forward to starting because I get along with everyone.”
