A knitting club from Melksham have spent months knitting more than 400 poppies to go on display in the town for Remembrance Sunday.

Ladies from the Crazy About Knitting group have been hard at work knitting and crocheting the poppies since March especially for the First World War centenary.

The group of 10 women meet every first Wednesday of the month at Melksham Baptist Church and they were asked by Cllr Pat Aves to knit as many poppies as they could as part of the commemoration.

Cllr Aves wanted to highlight the work the group does in knitting clothing and other items for charity.

The poppies will be placed on a board which will go on display during the Remembrance ceremony on Sunday and will then be put in the Assembly Hall and other locations in the town to show off the creations.

The poppies will also be used to make a wreath which will be placed at the Melksham Baptist Church.

Hilary McFall from the group said: “It’s been great to have been asked to do the poppies and they are all different, with different legion branches on.”

The group was given £500 by the Area Board to help pay for materials. Cllr Aves said the board is happy to consider any other groups who would like to apply for funding for First World War-related projects.
