Wiltshire Police have formally confirmed that the young man who died in a road traffic collision in Melksham on Saturday was Max George Lewis, 19, of Melksham.

They have released a picture of Max supplied to police by the family.

A spokesman said: "The family ask that media respect their privacy at this difficult time.

"Our family liaison officer will be speaking to the family about a tribute over the coming days."

Hundreds of flowers have been left by family and friends at the scene of the crash on Saturday afternoon.

Police are now urging people to come forward with any information they may have, as they believe two cars that did not stop at the scene may have been driven by friends of Max, who was a passenger in a red Citroen Saxo.

PC Peter Williamson said: "Witnesses travelling from the Lacock direction towards Melksham were overtaken before the collision by three vehicles.

"These three vehicles were travelling close together at speed.

"One was the Saxo, one we believe to be silver, one possibly blue. We haven't had that confirmed.

"A short time later the witnesses came across the Saxo which has lost control for some reason on the bend and collided with a van coming in the opposite direction.

"We are urging either the drivers to come forward themselves or somebody with any information to contact us or Crimestoppers."

The 25-year-old driver of the van from Trowbridge suffered minor injuries and was taken to the RUH in Bath. He has now returned home.
