The 22-year-old driver of the car which crashed in Forest Lane in Melksham on Saturday afternoon is thought to be in a stable condition after undergoing extensive surgery.

Friends have said Dan Palmer suffered from injuries including a punctured lung and broken pelvis after his vehicle was involved in a collision on Saturday afternoon in which 19-year-old passenger Max Lewis died.

Mr Palmer was flown to Southampton General Hospital by the Wiltshire Air Ambulance on Saturday after the accident. It is believed he will be moved to a local hospital by the end of the week.

At the scene of the crash friends of Max have been leaving flowers and messages.

The spoiler of the car which came off during the collision has also been signed and flowers, candles, McDonald's coffee cups and even PlayStation games have been left in tribute.

One tribute reads: “Max, you were a blessing to everyone and you will be missed like crazy. Such a lush person and always made everyone laugh. Take care up there and know we all love you.”

Other tributes read: “Heaven has gained a new angel in you my friend. Sleep in paradise Max.”

“You was the nicest, honest lad I have ever met. You had a heart of gold and always had a smile on your face. You will never be forgotten mate and will forever be in my heart. I feel lucky to have known you. Sleep well. RIP. Love you.”

“Max, my best friend, my brother. It all seems so surreal, I’m just expecting you to show up in your dressing gown and sunglasses and say ‘Yes Joezeey, where’s the party at?’ You’ve made such an impact on my life, I can’t remember life without you. Over 12 years it’s been, and you’ve made the most of every minute. Feels like yesterday we were stood on your roof throwing water bombs at cars or leaving your PS2 on for over a week just because we couldn’t save the game.”

“Never going to forget you pal, sleep well.”

Police have appealed for the drivers of the other vehicles thought to be involved to get in touch with them. Call 101 and ask for PC Peter Williamson, of the Roads Policing Unit, or the collision investigation team.
