MELKSHAM couple Gemma Last and Aidan Alford had an unforgettable start to the New Year as their baby Brayden arrived in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Miss Last was told Brayden James Alford, who was born at 2.07am at Bath’s Royal United Hospital, was the first Wiltshire baby to be born in 2015.

Brayden is the first child for the couple, who have been together for six years and live at Riverside Drive.

However Miss Last, 28, who is a lettings officer and Mr Alford, 32, a welder fabricator, were on tenterhooks after they waited an extra two weeks for him to be born.

“He was actually due December 17 and we were expecting him before Christmas, we didn’t think he would be as late as New Year,” she said.

“Aidan’s mum joked about hanging on till one minute past midnight on New Year’s Day but we were thinking hopefully it wouldn’t be that long.”

Miss Last went to hospital on December 29 to be induced as she was having contractions. She then had an emergency caesarean as Brayden was lying back to back.

And as New Year celebrations were taking place Brayden was born, weighing 9lb 11oz.

“It does make it special,” Miss Last said. “It is something we can tell him when he’s older, it can be his little claim to fame.”

The new family left for home the next day and have chosen their baby’s name to carry on a family theme, as Mr Alford’s dad is called Adrian.

Miss Last added: “He’s chilled out and laid back, but it’s early days. I think he looks like his dad, everyone comments how he looks like him.”
