CORSHAM PCSO Alan Byrne is hoping to break a world record by presenting his radio show continuously for eight days without stopping.

The 28-year-old from Calne, will be eating, sleeping and living at the Melksham Town Sound radio station during his attempt to be on air for 199 hours.

The current Guinness World record for the longest, continuous DJ marathon stands at 198 hours and was made by Netherland DJ Giel Beelen last year. The record for a team is just over 84 hours and was made by two DJs in Dubai in 2013.

Mr Byrne, who presents The Byrne it Up show every Saturday at the station in Sandridge Road, Melksham, will be joined by Will Bridger, 17, from Spa Road, Melksham, who set up the station in 2012.

The PCSO, who joined the Corsham Neighbourhood Policing team last year, was inspired to take up the challenge following former Radio One presenter Chris Moyles’ attempt of 52 hours back in 2011 for Comic Relief.

“It will be my home for eight days,” Mr Byrne said, “I’m feeling a mixture of emotions, but more excited, I just want to do it now.”

Every hour the duo will bank up a five minute break which they can take when they have reached 30 minutes, during that time they will have the chance to nap on the blow-up bed or use the cross-trainer to exercise.

Mr Byrne’s fiancé Jade Aldersley, 25, is also going to be on hand preparing his meals throughout the challenge.

To keep listeners entertained the pair will be doing quizzes, phone-ins and competitions.

As well as breaking the world record they are hoping to raise £2,500 for animal charity WWF, Mr Byrne added: “If we can get to that target I will be over the moon. The show is about endurance and WWF endures a lot of problems and we want to try and help them.”

The challenge will begin on Saturday , February 21 from 9am. To donate go to: uk.virginmoneygiving.com/AlanByrneOnTheRun and to listen live go to: melkshamtownsound.co.uk.
