POLICE pulled over more than 80 vehicles in Shurnhold, Melksham, as part of a national operation tackling crime.

Melksham Neighbourhood Policing team worked with seven agencies on Wednesday, including the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency checking for scrap metal thefts.

Just under half the cars checked near the former George Ward School were found to be committing some form of offence.

Two drivers were found to be using red diesel and fined £500 each. Two people were using their mobiles while driving, another person was not wearing a seatbelt and 15 cars had some form of defect, either a faulty light or worn tyres.

Another two drivers did not have waste carrier licences and five fixed penalty issues were also issued.

The four-hour operation, and Tornado, was headed by PC Kane Fulbrook-Smith from the town’s neighbourhood policing team, and involved 17 officers.

He said: “It was a very successful operation and each agency had their part to play. It also demonstrates that there is still a need to undertake future operations of this type in our area.”
