A CARE home in Broughton Gifford criticised for not protecting elderly residents from the risk of abuse, has improved, according to a recent inspection.

The Old Parsonage was subject to an unannounced visit by inspectors from the government care watchdog the Care Quality Commission in June last year, which criticised its hygiene standards, record-keeping and staffing levels.

At the beginning of December, CQC returned to re-inspect the home, which cares for 22 residents who have dementia and mental health conditions.

The new report published last week found the care home had met the standards of three out of the five categories reviewed.

Caring for people safely and protecting them from harm; staffing and quality; and suitability of management were all found to meet regulations.

Relatives of residents in the home told the inspectors they were happy with the care being given. It also stated staff were kind and had a good understanding of people’s support needs.

The two categories needing action were treating people with respect and involving them in their care and the provision of care; treatment and support that meets people's needs.

The report reads: “People were usually treated with respect and dignity by the staff, however, we observed some conversations and interactions that did not demonstrate respect.

“Although people were receiving the care they needed, we found that some details of how decisions were made and how care was planned had not been kept up to date. This increased the risk that people would receive care or treatment that was inappropriate or unsafe.”

The CQC has asked The Old Parsonage to send them a report explaining what action it will take to meet the standards.

A spokesman from Roseville Care Homes Ltd, owners of the home, said: “Having gone through some tough times during the last year, we are pleased that the CQC have acknowledged the improvements in the services provided at the Old Parsonage.

“We would like to thank all the relatives for their support & understanding, as well as health professionals who were assisting us throughout during that period.”
