SCHOOLGIRL Heather Kerr is hoping she has what it takes to wow judges after reaching the regional finals of a national singing competition.

The 15-year-old from Bowerhill secured her spot in the TeenStar contest after her audition hit the right note earlier this year.

The Melksham Oak student also writes her own songs and has one up her sleeve especially to impress the judges at the regional finals on April 11 at music venue The Anson Rooms in Bristol.

Speaking about finding out she had made the regional finals she said: “I was really excited, it was great and I was very pleased.”

Heather is also a regular performer at The Pilot Pub at their open mic nights and music events where she can get feedback on her singing.

She added: “It’s normally pretty positive especially when I do my own songs and it’s nice to perform in front of people and see what songs they like.”

If she goes through to the finals she will have the chance to win £5,000, singing lessons and a recording studio session. Previous winners of the TeenStar competition include singers Birdy, Lucy Spraggon and Luke Friend.

“I’m a little bit nervous but mostly excited,” she said, “I’ve done a lot of practice and I feel really excited.

“I’ve been singing for quite a while and used to do talents shows at primary school. I love writing and have quite a few songs.

“To have career in singing, that is what I would love to do, it is my unlimited goal.”

Heather is also the third youngster from the Pilot music nights in successive years to reach this stage of the competition. All are protégés of local coach Mel Austin.

Both Courtney Buchanan in 2013 and Izzy Felstead in 2014 reached the national finals. Heather hoping their tips and advice will see her emulate their success.
