A CHARITY football match and fun day in memory of Leigh Gaskin will be held in Melksham on Sunday.

The 27-year-old of Longford Road died last August, 18 months after being diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer that affects children and young adults.

Friends and family of the former Aloeric School and George Ward School pupil have joined together to organise the event, which will include games between former managers and players from Melksham Park, who Mr Gaskin played for from the age of eight to 16.

There will also be an under sevens’ tournament and a match between AFC Melksham’s disabled football team, a raffle, barbecue, sweet stall and more.

The charity day will also double up as a social event and reunion for the George Ward School class of 1998-2003, the years Mr Gaskin attended the former secondary school.

The organising committee are calling for as many people as possible to turn out on the day to help raise as much money as possible. Mr Gaskin’s friends are flying in from all over the world to be a part of the event with some travelling from as far as Toronto and South Africa.

The event will take place on Sunday, May 10 from 1.30pm at Melksham Town Football Club’s home ground The Conigre and proceeds raised will go towards Sarcoma UK.

Since August events raised in memory of Mr Gaskin, including a video game marathon earlier this year, have raised £7,000 for charity.
