MELKSHAM Town Council has pledged to support an application which could see 30 new retirement apartments be built on Spa Road although councillors have voiced their concerns this week.

At the development control committee meeting on Monday, councillors recommended to Wiltshire Council that the planning application should be approved although believe several details should be straightened out beforehand.

Developers McCarthy & Stone are hoping to demolish Withleigh House, which currently lies on the land next to Hardie Walk, and transform it into a three-storey building with 13 one-bedroom and 17 two-bedroom flats.

There would also be communal facilities, 23 parking spaces and one full-time employee.

Councillors said they had concerns over the height of the proposed three storey building and added that the allocated parking spaces were not sufficient for the scale of the plans.

They were also worried about the entrance area on Spa Road which they believe would be very busy for residents, but.

As a consultee on the application to Wiltshire Council, they concluded that approval should be granted.

More than 50 residents attended a public consultation at Melksham Town Hall in April to see the plans and meet with the company to discuss ideas and concerns.

Wiltshire Council has until Tuesday, September 1 to decide on the application.
