Julian Drew had been remanded in custody awaiting trial after pleading not guilty to charges of death by dangerous driving and dangerous driving.

But after hearing he has been offered a place at a bail hostel, and plans to do a college course, a judge at Swindon Crown Court has freed him to live there.

The 26-year-old. of Littlejohn Avenue, Melksham, has been told to live and sleep at the premises on Rosebery Street, Swindon, and observe a 6pm to 7am tagged curfew.

Tristan Harwood, defending, said his client had enrolled on a chainsaw course at Lackham College as he bids to find work.

Drew, along with Daniel Palmer, 23, and Connor Forester, 19, all pleaded not guilty to the charge in relation to the incident on Saturday, November 15, last year.

It is alleged the three were racing on a narrow country road when the crash, in which the 19-year-old died, happened at about 3pm on Forest Road, Lacock.

Palmer is said to have been driving a Y-reg Citroen Saxo in which Max was a passenger while Drew was in a Nissan Primera and Forester another Saxo.

All three from Melksham pleaded not guilty to the charges and are due to face trial on Monday, September 7.

Max lived in Baldham, Seend, with his father Brian Atkinson, 54. His mum Nicky Lewis, 50, lives nearby in Martinslade with Max’s older brother Dan, 24.

As a child Max attended Seend Church of England Primary School before going to the then George Ward School in Melksham. He also spent a year at Wiltshire College's Chippenham campus where he studied engineering.
