MELKSHAM Flower Club has handed over a £500 cheque to charity Doorway, which helps homeless people.

The club nominated it as its charity of the year for 2015 after hearing about the work it does, providing support to young homeless people.

On Tuesday (Jan 19)Lisa Lewis, a project worker for the Chippenham charity, was presented with the cheque at Spencers Sports Club in Beanacre Road.

Outgoing chairman Rosalyn Clarke said: “We did a few things, including a soup and dessert day followed by a quiz and a cream tea party at our secretary’s house.

“It is part of our constitution that we raise money for a new charity each year. It was nice to finish off my two years as chairman.

“It was good to have ended on a high note. I have done two years so it is nice to hand over the baton to someone else so I can have a rest.

I think it is important we help people that are less fortunate than ourselves and especially these smaller charities that do not get the attention they deserve.”

The new chairman who was sworn in this year will be Caroline Christopher now takes over from Ms Clarke.
