BOWLERS in Melksham are determined not to let the vandals beat them, and have set up a security fence around their green, after a series of attacks.

Secretary Philip Wells has grown sick of the repeated acts of vandalism, which he says have taken place since the closure of Melksham House in 2014.

The latest attack was in early January when damage caused by vandals resulted in the loss of picnic benches and damage to the surface of the green.

Mr Wells said: “I would hope that the erecting of the fence will stop this and isolate and protect this important town asset from hooligans.

“We are doing it to preserve a vital way of life for many members of our community who enjoy both the active and social sides of being part of our club.

“The bowling surface, in particular, represents a considerable investment by the membership; in excess of £9,000 per year in maintenance costs, and is, of course, the heart and soul of the club’s activities during the spring and summer months.

“It is worth pointing out that Avon Bowls Club has been in existence within the grounds of Melksham House since 1922, a tradition which we at the club intend to carry on in a more and more successful manner."
