MELKSHAM residents are anti-EU, according to parish councillor Paul Carter after he set up a pro-exit campaign stall in the town.

Mr Carter, of Semington Road, believes vast swathes of Melksham's population are in favour of leaving the European Union but that many were still undecided.

The 65-year-old, of the Campaign All Go group, set up the stall in Melksham last weekend in order to promote Brexit in the June referendum.

The out campaigner said: “It was very interesting. We were there for about three hours. We gave out about 100 leaflets to people of all ages.

“I have to say that of all the people we spoke to, only one said that he was in favour of staying in the European Union.

“Around 50 per cent were still undecided whereas the other 49 per cent said that they would vote yes if they were given the opportunity.”

The Campaign All Go group were joined by UKIP South West and Gibraltar MEP Dr Julia Reid as part of a larger action day which saw another stall set up in Bath.

Mr Carter added: “My reason is purely democratic as we should be able to vote out a government every five years.

“If you asked me a couple of years ago I would have said we do not have a chance in hell due to the scare tactics by the government.

“Now on the ground I see more people are open to our side. I am doing this purely for democracy and if the British people choose to stay in, then fine they have decided.

"We have huge problems with immigration and services in the country. What we want is an Australian points-based system."

MEP Dr Reid, said: “The Go action day was very successful. It gave us an opportunity to speak to the public about the need to Brexit to reclaim our freedom and independence.

“Our laws and legislation should be made in Westminster and not by the anti-democratic and unaccountable EU.

“Let's make June 23 British Independence day by voting to leave the EU. It is time to get our country back.”
