AFTER opening just over a year ago organisers of the Melksham men’s shed are worried that it is in danger of stagnating if they do not find a new premises.

Located in Awdry Avenue their current site only has space for four people causing huge problems for their 20 members to attend each meeting.

Chairman Christopher Pickett, of Woodstock Gardens, believes that the club is in dire need of new facilities and is attempting to raise the requisite £15,000 to change locations.

“We really only have about half a porter cabin. If you saw it you would be gobsmacked. It is too small for all of us and we desperately need a new place,” said Mr Pickett.

“There is a really big take up for the shed and there are a lot more people that want to join but at the minute we just do not have the room.

“There is usually a turnout of about 10 people but we have room for about four of us at each meeting. As you might imagine this is severely restricting our membership."

Men's sheds or community sheds are non-profit organisations, which attempt to advise and improve the overall health of men through craftsmanship and handiwork activities.

Melksham’s shed is, in fact, not only geared towards men but also caters to women with meetings held every Monday and Wednesday.

Mr Pickett added: “We are stuck between a rock and a hard place as if we only have space for four people and they do not fit then in the end they may not come.

“It is disappointing that we cannot have a bigger premises but Wiltshire Council do not have anything to offer us at the minute.

“Really, it is in danger of stagnating if we do not get the new place and that is the worst scenario.

“There is a need for old people in Melksham that have nowhere else to go and places like this really help their state of mind and wellbeing.”
