A 54-year-old man is in custody today after he was arrested on suspicion of drink driving in Melksham.

The man, who was driving a Renault Clio, collided with a stationary vehicle in Portal Road, Melksham, at approximately 6.25am.

He then drove off and collided with a lamp post near to the Water Meadow Pub before coming to a standstill in Cranesbill Road.

A roadside breath test was carried out and the man, from Calne, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

He was taken to Melksham custody where he remains this afternoon.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: "Drink driving is unacceptable and is simply not worth the risk.

"We cannot stress enough the importance of not drinking before getting behind the wheel. Plan your journey ahead if you are planning on drinking alcohol."
