FIRE crews from Melksham, Trowbridge and Chippenham are tackling a blaze at the cricket pavilion close to Melksham town centre.

They were called to the ground off the Market Place on Saturday afternoon but the building, behind Melksham House in the Market Place, was completely destroyed.

Police, who were alerted at 2.20pm on Sunday, have now appealed for witnesses.

PC Nige Gilbert said: “It is very early stages in the investigation and it has not yet been determined whether or not the fire was started deliberately but we have received reports that two youths were seen in the area just minutes before the fire was reported.

“We would be particularly interested in speaking to these two youths, or anyone else who may have been in the area at the time of the incident.

“Sadly, the building has been destroyed by fire and we are keen to find out exactly how it happened.”

Anyone who was in the area of the Market Place between 2pm and 2.45pm yesterday should call PC Nige Gilbert at Chippenham Police Station on 101.
