FIVE people were rushed to hospital and the A350 in Melksham shut down for five hours last Saturday following a ‘freak’ crash in which a car was flipped on its side.

Fire, police and ambulance crews were called out last weekend at 2pm to the A350 near McDonalds after a Honda Jazz swerved across the road, collided with a Toyota Yaris and turned over.

The driver of the Honda had to be cut from his car by fire crews and suffered cuts believed to have been caused by his sun roof shattering.

Although, seven people were injured in the incident, in which a Peugeot Partner was also struck, they were not as seriously hurt as previously thought and all five casualties admitted to hospital are believed to have been discharged the following day.

District fire commander for Devizes, Jack Nicholson, who attended the scene, said: “There were three vehicles that we could identify as being involved in the collision.

“It is one of the weirdest crashes that I have seen. For it to be on such a slow moving road and so narrow. It is a really narrow road so it seems a bit of a freak accident.

“The Honda was on its side and we needed to extricate a man from it and we did that by removing the roof and putting the casualty on a spine board.

“We worked really well with the police and ambulance service. There was quite a heavy burden for the ambulance teams to take on but with the Swift Medics coming as well they were very well served.”

Two men and one woman were taken to the RUH but discharged the following day. A man and woman were also taken to Southmead in Bristol but are also believed to have been released the next day.

It is understood the air ambulance, although at the scene, did not convey anyone to hospital.

Wiltshire Police are asking for witnesses to come forward and those with information should contact them on 101.
