GREEN fingered enthusiasts from a Bowerhill action group have been working hard to maintain a picnic area that has won awards for its outstanding presentation.

Every week, volunteers from the Bowerhill action group been trying to remove brambles and grass on the bank at the back of Duxford Close, where a large number of saplings were planted a few years ago.

The saplings have grown into trees but the long grass and brambles were suffocating them but thanks to their efforts the trees can grow uninhibited.

"The weeds and brambles have rocketed back up so we have been at it quite regularly to keep it in order and thankfully we have done very well to clear it up," said chairman of BRAG, Mike Mills, 72.

"What is lovely is that people are using the picnic area again and others are planting flowers and seeds which is wonderful.

"However we still are looking for some volunteers, preferably someone with a strimmer who can cut the grass and brambles down around the trees on a regular basis and to look after the trees."

The picnic area won a level five outstanding award in the Its Your Neighbourhood category at the South West In Bloom competition in both 2014 and 2015.
