THE FITNESS industry is one of the most competitive ones around. Globally there are more than 180,000 fitness clubs and of those clubs they have earned an estimated £65b from their 145m members.

Not everyone can thrive in such fierce competition, but that is exactly what is happening at Melksham's City Fitness.

Since opening in 2012, the centre, in Roundpond, has transformed into one of the largest gyms in the area and in the last 12 months alone their membership based has shot up by 100 members.

"What we have done is make this place is make it attractive for people of all ages, shapes and sizes and giving that personal touch that makes everyone feel welcome," said owner Cas Jackson.

"What is very encouraging to see over the last year to me, is the change in mindset towards a healthier option and lifestyle. We have a great, fairly small workforce here who are great at what they do.

"We pride ourselves on getting to know our members which is why so many have stayed on. Getting new members is fantastic but retaining them is just as important and we have managed to do that."

The 7500sqft facility offers spinning and conditioning classes and a gym with more than 65 pieces of equipment.

City Fitness is spread over two floors, incorporating six main areas: a resistance studio, a cardio area, a free weights room, a protein bar, a supplement shop and relaxation area, a spinning room and a fitness studio.

"We have put a fair amount of investment into this place which has paid off and a few weeks ago Lee Priest, an international bodybuilder, was here to give a talk and all of this can get our name out there," she said.

In regards to what the future holds, Ms Jackson is excited about what lies ahead for the fitness centre.

"It is a very exciting time. We are looking at having an outdoor training area and more classes to help us grow," she said.

"But whatever happens in the next few years, if someone walks through that door, whoever you are, we will treat them exactly the same way we treat everyone - with a personal touch."
