THE wonderful world of comics descended upon Melksham this weekend for the town's annual comic-con extravaganza.

Around 1,000 piled into the Assembly Hall, Market Place, over the two days, for a feast of costumes, workshops, artists, writers, special comic book guests and much more.

Some of the most eye-catching costumes included Captain America, characters from Back to the Future and storm troopers among others in another successful showing.

Comic Con organiser Hayley Spencer, who also owns KomiX on Bank Street, said: "It was just an incredible weekend once again. The cosplay was just amazing and the enthusiasm from people to attend an event in a little town like this was fantastic.

"It is a niche and alternative market but the way everyone gets behind it makes it all very special. There were too many amazing costumes to name, the creativity was magnificent.

"It went down an absolute storm despite the thunder and lightning. There is always things to work on and improve but overall it was a huge success and we are already planning next year's edition."

The feverishly excited attendees also enjoyed jewellery creators, face painting, balloon sculptors and comic book panels.

To bolster the event further still, a family superhero picnic is taking place last Friday at the shop, which was followed by the launch of the official Comic Con beer, brewed by Wadworth, in the King’s Arms, Market Place, later that evening.

After the festival, a packed Kings Arms pub hosted a comic related pub quiz to bring the weekend's lively proceedings to an end.

"The Friday event was a nice way to kick off the weekend and the pub quiz was a great way to end it all," said Ms Spencer, who is also a Melksham Town cllr.

"All of this however would not have been possible without the exceptional support of our 30 volunteers who were magnificent.

"They worked tirelessly to help make this event run smoothly. Each and everyone of them gave up everything for this and we are very grateful."

The festival is a non-profit event that celebrates and promotes comic books and sequential art in its many forms, from web comics, independent works, publishers, printers and retailers.
