LITTER pickers converged upon Melksham on Sunday to try and make the town glisten as part of their Tidy Town clean-up.

Nearly 25 volunteers tried to make Melksham spick and span from 1pm-3pm and tackled dirty bus shelters, street signs, weeds and rubbish.

Equipped with cleaning equipment, including litter pickers, bags, high-visibility jackets and secateurs, the helpers set off across the town, collecting dozens of bags of rubbish in a productive couple of hours.

Melksham Town Council deputy clerk, Miriam Zaccarelli, said: "It was excellent to see so many people come out again for this monthly event. It was a really brilliant team effort and you could get a strong sense of a good community spirit.

"I would also like to thank Wiltshire Council's Stuart Renfrew who gave up his Sunday to help too."

Mayor Terri Welch was one of the do-gooders and managed to help clear five bags of weeds from outside the library flower beds in Lowbourne.

Tidy Town days, which began in 2012, take place on the first Sunday of the month from the town hall.
