IT RAINED goals at the Conigre as Melksham Town rolled out the red carpet for a team of Manchester United Legends and duly enthralled nearly 2000 fans.

In a match originally intended as a curtain-raiser for the club’s new £7 million Woolmore Farm home, Melksham returned to their old ground and served up a treat for a monster crowd with a little help from a clutch of former Old Trafford favourites.

Champions League winner David May headlined a United side that ran out 10-7 winners over Melksham, who even had manager Darren Perrin make a brief cameo.

Supporters that attended Sunday’s game are being advised to retain their tickets in order to gain free entry to Melksham’s first home match at their new ground – work is expected to be completed by December at the earliest following a recent delay – and chairman Dave Wiltshire was delighted with how the day unfolded.

“From the moment we found out that we wouldn’t be able to host it at the new ground, we only had 14 days or so to get the Conigre ready but on Sunday, it probably looked the best it ever has done,” said Wiltshire.

“A lot of work went in to getting the Conigre ready and from Sunday morning, right up until the game kicked off, it was an absolutely brilliant day.

“All of the staff, management and committee members at the football club pull their weight and everything went really, really well.

“The Manchester United legends were superb and they seemed to be really impressed with what we’re trying to do as a football club – we even took them to see the new ground.

“I think we could have sold 600 or 700 more tickets if we’d wanted to but we felt it was best to restrict it because we’d never held anything with that many fans, and we’re chuffed with how well it went because it was the most professional thing we’ve ever done.

“The match was a typical charity match and it was all about who could score the most goals. There were so many that I think who got the goals got lost a bit but I do remember that Clayton Blackmore got the first one and it was an absolute screamer.

“It has been hard hearing the news about our new ground but Sunday was a great day and we’re all looking forward to the future now.”
