FRENCH fries were temporarily off the menu at Melksham's McDonald's on Wednesday after a fryer caught fire in their kitchen, briefly closing the fast-food chain.

Between 1.30-2.10pm, the Beanacre Road restaurant had to be closed and customers were asked to leave whilst staff dealt with the problem.

When McDonald's reopened, customers were unable to order French fries until around 6pm.

A McDonald's spokesman said: "We can confirm that a minor incident occurred at our Melksham restaurant earlier today involving one of our fryers. Our first priority is our customers’ safety and they were therefore asked to leave the restaurant. "No one was hurt and the restaurant reopened a matter of minutes later. Due to this incident, fries were unavailable until Wednesday evening. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause to our customers."

Firecrews were not called to the incident.
